GEORGE SUTHERLAND Jr, MD

With a passion for medicine that is perhaps only matched by his passion for the outdoors, Dr. George Sutherland hails from Richmond, VA and attended Eastern Virginia Medical School. After graduation (and after a brief snowboarding sabbatical in Colorado), he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, LA.

His move to the southeast came when Dr. Sutherland received his fellowship training from the Hughston Sports Medicine Fellowship in Columbus, GA. Again, though the outdoors came calling and Dr. Sutherland found the answer in Bluffton, SC, where the golf and fishing are among some of the best in the world.

He’s spent the last decade in Bluffton as part of Optim Orthopedics, where he has focused his areas of expertise on sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and knee construction with a focus on shoulder surgeries and ways to improve existing methods. “Shoulder surgery is not as bad as everyone thinks,” he said. “That’s what patients tell me, and that’s what has been mirrored in the research.”

Outside of the practice, Dr. Sutherland has supported several organizations in his community, serving as team physician Ridgeland High School’s football team and working with area non-profit Volunteers in Medicine to provide care for the less fortunate. “My door is always wide open for that group.”

Dr. Sutherland performs surgery at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC, Hilton Head Hospital in Hilton Head, SC, Doctors Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville, GA and performs outpatient surgery at Optim Orthopedic Center in Savannah, GA. Clinics are held Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays in Bluffton, SC.

And when he’s not there, you’ll find him out in the fresh air, working on his golf game or chasing that next trophy fish.
