Charles Hope, MD
Charles Hope, MD, is a specialist in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction, employing the most current treatments to alleviate pain and restore his patients to an active lifestyle.
While Dr. Charles A. Hope II is renowned for his skill as a joint replacement surgeon and his knowledge of cutting-edge techniques and tools like the MAKO robotic system, it is ultimately his dedication to patient care that defines him as a physician.
“I believe that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment,” he said. “That’s why I explain every step of the diagnostic process.”
That focus stems from one of his first introductions to orthopedic medicine, when he suffered an injury playing high school football. “The orthopedic surgeon who took care of me was not every empathetic… he ended up treating a fracture with a cast whereas most doctors would have recommended surgery. I thought I could do better.”
The journey to doing better found him learning at the feet of mentors like Dr. Michael Mayor and Dr. Philip Bernini, who taught him the finer points of minimizing patient impacts during surgery. His internship at USAF Medical Center Keesler saw him going from residency to attending physician in around two weeks. “It was a bit of a learning curve,” he said with a laugh.
He has since gone on to complete more than 4,000 minimally invasive computer-assisted total knee replacements and over 2,000 minimally invasive direct anterior approach total hip replacements among countless other procedures. When he’s not demonstrating his skills as a surgeon, he’s honing them as a golfer (he’s a constant presence on the Landings Club’s top 10 rounds list) and giving back to the community through Operation Walk.
