Orthopedic Trauma

Austin Wallace, MD
Savannah | Memorial Hospital & St. Joseph Chandler

Born and raised in Atlanta, Austin Wallace, MD didn’t come from a family of physicians, but a high school anatomy class set his future pursuits in motion. Fascinated by the intricate interplay of muscles, tendons, and bones, he knew early on that he wanted to dedicate his career to understanding and repairing the human body. Today, as a fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon, Dr. Wallace specializes in treating fractures and complex musculoskeletal injuries with the aim of restoring patients’ function and independence after life-altering events.

Dr. Wallace began his academic journey at the University of Georgia before earning his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He then honed his surgical skills during an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine. His commitment to excellence led to advanced training with multiple fellowships in Orthopedic Trauma. First, at the University of Florida, followed by an elite AO Trauma International Fellowship in Zurich, Switzerland, where he trained under world-renowned expert Dr. Hans-Christoph Pape, who substantially advanced the fields of polytrauma and pelvic fractures with his esteemed research and practice.

In the field of orthopedic trauma, no two days—and no two fractures—are the same”. Dr. Wallace thrives on this challenge, managing injuries ranging from fractures of the upper and lower extremities to more complex cases like nonunions and malunions, orthopedic implant failures, and periprosthetic fractures. “Trauma care combines mental precision and hands-on problem solving,” Dr. Wallace shares. “It’s deeply rewarding to help patients regain mobility and independence after serious injuries.”

Orthopedic trauma doesn’t just focus on fixing broken bones—it’s about addressing the unique stories and needs of every patient. Whether it’s a fall, a car accident, or a long-healing fracture, Dr. Wallace is passionate about tailoring care to meet individual goals and challenges. With expertise in both surgical and non-surgical techniques, he is committed to providing personalized, compassionate treatment every step of the way.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Wallace enjoys balancing his active professional life with quality family time and with outdoor pursuits like cycling, soccer, skiing, and rock climbing.

Dr. Wallace is proud to join the team at Optim Orthopedics, bringing his skills and dedication to the community. He is now welcoming new patients and is ready to help individuals of all ages overcome traumatic injuries and return to doing what they love.
