Joseph Snooks, MD - Wholistic Medical Experience
A native of Effingham County, Dr. Snooks returns home with an uncommon combination of expertise. In addition to specializing in non-operative sports medicine, he is board certified in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, giving him a distinctive perspective when caring for active patients across the lifespan — from young athletes still growing and developing to adults working to stay mobile, competitive and independent.
Dr. Snooks begins seeing patients Tuesday, August 18 at the Optim Orthopedics Rincon clinic and Optim Health Sylvania campus.
His practice focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions involving the body’s movement and function. This includes sports injuries, joint and muscle pain, tendon and ligament conditions, overuse injuries, sprains and strains, concussion management, exercise-related concerns and other issues that can keep patients from performing at their best.
What makes Dr. Snooks’ background particularly valuable is the ability to understand patients not simply by where they hurt, but by where they are in life.
For children and teenagers, his pediatric training provides an important understanding of growing bones, joints and growth plates and how injuries can affect young athletes differently than adults. For adult patients, his internal medicine background adds a broader understanding of how overall health can influence mobility, recovery and physical performance.
Combined with advanced sports medicine fellowship-training, that experience allows Dr. Snooks to care for everyone from the student athlete trying to safely return to competition to the weekend golfer, runner or active adult who simply wants to keep doing what they love.
“Sports medicine is really about helping people stay active at every stage of life,” said Dr. Snooks. “Whether I’m seeing a young athlete, a working adult or someone who wants to remain active as they get older, the goal is to understand what is limiting them and develop a treatment plan that helps them move forward safely.”
Dr. Snooks was born and raised in Effingham County and earned his undergraduate degree and played baseball at Armstrong Atlantic State University before attending Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah. He later completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, becoming board certified in both specialties, before pursuing additional fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine (University of Alabama).
His return represents more than the addition of another physician. It brings a local connection back to a growing community with an increasing need for convenient access to specialized musculoskeletal care.
